CHICLANA: Playa de la Barrosa, "Sancti Petri"

Chiclana, located in the Bay of Cadiz, is one of the major cities of the province. As proved by archaeological findings, its origin as a settlement dates back to the Palaeolithic, and its foundation as a city to the Phoenicians. Today, there are several towers, churches and convents to visit, and Chiclana's gastronomy offers fine products from land and sea.

The island of Sancti Petri is in front of the coast of Chiclana, and is considered to be the place where the Temple of Hercules was located. It was the most famous temple in the western Mediterranean dating back to the times of the Trojan war. Upon its ruins, the castle Castillo de Sancti Petri was built in the thirteenth century. It offers beautiful views especially at sunset.

The beach of La Barrosa, 8 kilometres long, has been awarded with the "Blue Flag" of the European Union as well as the Q for Quality Tourism for its cleanliness, its respect for the environment and its many services.

Due to its length, it is divided into three parts, popularly called "pistas": The first has a long promenade with shops, restaurants, entertainment facilities and garden areas. The second pista has residential areas, and the third is the urbanization "Novo Sancti Petri".

"Novo Sancti Petri" offers an environmental-friendly enclave Foto with beautiful landscapes and preserves the dunes and the original native vegetation. Its hotels, mostly of 4 or 5 stars, are located along the beach of fine white sand. There are also several shopping and sports centres, as well as the golf course "Golf Novo Sancti Petri."
