FUENGIROLA

Fuengirola is not only one of the most popular, but undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beach resorts on the Costa del Sol. Like many other places on the coast, Fuengirola was originally a fishing village, but meanwhile along the about seven kilometers long sandy beaches a modern tourist center has developed.

Fuengirola is considered particularly chic, with many boutiques and fine shops, but also high-class hotels and excellent restaurants. Along the beach promenade you will find many Chiringuitos, small beach restaurants where you can eat excellent fish. Practically everywhere one finds the popular Pescaito Frito (fried fish), sort of a "national dish" on the Spanish south coast. You should also try the delicious Boquerones (small sardines) and Puntillitas (tiny squids).

Apart from gastronomy also the great leisure activities should be mentioned, including boat trips as well as jet-skiing, parasailing or water skiing. For golf players there are several facilities in the surrounding area - it was for some reason that the Costa del Sol has been renamed to "Costa del Golf" frequently.

On a hill in the south of the city there is the old Moorish fortress Castillo de Sohail Foto , the symbol of Fuengirola. It reminds us that Fuengirola was one of the last bastions of the Moors in Spain and could not be conquered by the Christians until 1487, five years before the fall of Granada. Today, the ruins are a popular popular destination for excursions, and from time to time music events, festivals and even a market take place in the old castle.
